The Sockeye Salmon, often referred to as "red" or "blueback" salmon, are known for being the hardest fighting of the Salmon family. They are notorious for trashing reels and breaking rods, although their average weight is only 6-8 lbs. In Alaska, the annual return of Sockeye Salmon to the Kenai River drainage is the most highly anticipated in sport fishery. These fish are highly regarded for their rich, flavorful meat. Sockeye Salmon is considered by many to be the best tasting of all the pacific salmon species. With an annual return of over 1 million fish, anglers have plenty of opportunity to experience all the excitement fishing for Sockeye Salmon has to offer. Two separate runs of Sockeye Salmon are received in the Kenai River. The first run beginning in mid-June and the second in mid-July. The first run has an annual return of 30,000 to 60,000 fish peaking during the last week of the month, and tapering off during the first week of July. The late run is the larger of the 2 runs boasting an annual return that most times exceeds 1 million fish. Late run Sockeye Salmon start overrunning the mainstream of the Kenai River, and its many tributaries, in mid-July and continue in strong numbers until Mid-August. You'll literally see Sockeye Salmon everywhere when this run is in full swing! |
