King Salmon

The King Salmon of Alaska is the largest species of Pacific Salmon. The present sport fishing record in the state of Alaska is 97.25 lbs taken on the Kenai River. In fact, 9 of the 10 top record holders were pulled from the Kenai River.

The State of Alaska average for this salmon is aprox. 20lbs. King salmon in the Kenai River are typically upwards of 50 lbs. The official fish of the state of Alaska, no other fish draws as much attention as the King Salmon.

The dream of most fisherman that come to the Kenai Peninsula is hooking and landing an Alaskan King Salmon. Early May to August is a busy time on the Kenai with amateur and professional fisherman alike all trying to fulfill the dream of landing "the big one". This is the annual migration time for the King Salmon. When these beautiful fish begin to return to their spawning streams, most times following the Kenai Peninsula coastline until they head up the river or stream to their original spawning beds.

This makes fishing in the Kenai excellent at this time of year.

The best way to catch an Alaskan King Salmon is to observe a professional fishing guide. In recent years statistics from the State of Alaska Fish and Game Department show an unguided fisherman will spend about 40 hours fishing before even hooking a King Salmon, while guided vacationers will spend only a few hours before hooking and landing an Alaskan King Salmon from the Kenai.
