Halibut Fishing
Halibut in Alaska are known to be the largest in the world. Halibut caught for sport average around 30 lbs, but fish over 100 lbs or more are caught all the time. The record for sport caught halibut is 459 lbs!
Alaska halibut are suited for life on the bottom of the ocean. They are stealthy predators, camouflaged to blend with the floor of the sea. There, they lie in wait for squid, fish and crabs to venture unsuspectingly by. Constantly changing currents, tides, and annual fish migrations in the Gulf of Alaska can make one day a great halibut fishing day and the next, well, not so good. Fishing guides with knowledge and experience of these ever-changing conditions can mean the difference between a fantastic fishing trip, or a waste of your time. Anyone can catch a big halibut every now and then, but a truly good guide is measured by his ability to do so on a consistant basis.
