Silver Salmon

Silver Salmon AlaskaThe Silver Salmon is often known as the great sport fish of Alaska. The record in the state of Alaska is 26 lbs. In the Kenai River, the average size is from 9-24 lbs.

Silver Salmon in Alaska begin to gather in mouths of their spawaning rivers and streams beginning in late July as they wait for the optimum water temperature before continuing their migration to their spawning grounds.

The Silver Salmon's life cycle is much like the life cycle of the King Salmon. Before migrating to freshwater, Silver Salmon will stay in the fresh water for a year sometimes 2. Once they make it to the fresh water, they will spend aprox. 2 years swimming in the Kenai Coastal waters.

This pattern makes the Silver Salmon a fantastic sport fish for a very long season on the Kenai Peninsula.

Silver Salmon begin to arrive in the Kenai in late July and many lakes and streams have a run through September.

One of the things fishermen love most about fishing for Silver Salmon is that the peak times often coincide with peak season for rainbow fishing. Many fishermen plan their Alaskan fishing tirips for late August through September to be able to fish for both rainbows and Silver Salmon.
